5th Grade Modern Band Project

This year, my school was a recipient of an arts grant and with part of the materials budget we were able to purchase a variety of modern band instruments such as guitars, bass, and pocket drum kit. We spent multiple units in 5th grade learning about modern song form, modern music genres, the basics of playing the instruments, and different jobs that are available in the modern commercial music industry. Students then took the skills we learned in those units and were tasked with independently choosing a genre, composing their music and lyrics, and deciding each student’s role in the band project. After several rotations we were able to record their songs! I also partnered with our art teacher, who then worked with the students to create album covers for each of their songs. Every student in our 5th grade played a role in creating our large project, and for a first time composing in modern form, I am very proud of the pieces they produced! A selection of songs by my students are available to hear below.
